# Why a price per 100 g misleads for coffee and tea, and what the shelf shows

A price per hundred grams compares like with like only when the pack size, the format, the blend and the pin code match. In our readings of coffee and tea on JioMart and DMart, each of those moved the unit price within a single brand. Read the pack before you divide, and compare at the same place and time.

## Key takeaways

- A price per hundred grams compares fairly only when pack size, format, blend and place match.
- In Rewalto's JioMart readings in October 2026, Nescafe Classic cost about 488 rupees per 100 g in a 24 g pack and about 377 in a 90 g pack.
- For filter coffee with chicory, divide by the coffee share on the pack: the pack that is cheaper per gram can be dearer per gram of coffee.
- The same pack can carry different prices at different pin codes, so compare at one place and one time.

This post is the timely take. The evergreen how-to is the guide [Same product, different price: compare shopping apps fairly](https://rewalto.com/guides/same-product-different-price-across-apps), which covers the topic in full.

## What does a price per hundred grams compare?

The selling price divided by the weight on the pack, scaled to a hundred grams. It is the fairest way to compare two packs of different sizes, and the guide to [comparing prices across apps](https://rewalto.com/guides/same-product-different-price-across-apps) uses it for that reason.

It goes wrong when the grams on each side are not the same kind of grams. The examples below come from Rewalto's readings of coffee and tea listings on JioMart and DMart in the week of 15 to 21 October 2026.

## How much does pack size move the unit price?

A good deal, inside one product. Rewalto read Nescafe Classic instant coffee on JioMart at a Mumbai pin code, 400013, at 117 rupees for a 24 g pack between 15 and 19 October 2026, about 488 rupees per 100 g. At the same pin code on 20 and 21 October 2026, Rewalto read the 90 g pack of the same coffee at 339 rupees, about 377 rupees per 100 g.

So a comparison between a small pack of one brand and a large pack of another measures pack size as much as price.

## Why do instant, freeze-dried and premix products not compare per gram?

Because they are different products sold by weight. At the same Mumbai pin code on JioMart, Rewalto read Bru Instant Coffee at 215 rupees for 100 g, and Bru Gold, a freeze-dried coffee, at 273 rupees for 55 g, or about 496 rupees per 100 g.

Tea shows the same thing. In Rewalto's JioMart readings at that pin code, ten 15 g sachets of Red Label ginger chai premix sold at 115 rupees, about 77 rupees per 100 g, while a 500 g pack of Red Label leaf tea sold at 304 rupees, about 61 rupees per 100 g. A premix sachet and a spoon of leaf tea make different cups, so their per-gram prices answer different questions.

## Why does the blend matter for filter coffee?

Filter coffee packs in India commonly blend coffee with chicory and state the coffee share on the pack. Between 15 and 21 October 2026, Rewalto read two 500 g packs of Continental Malgudi filter coffee on JioMart at three pin codes: one titled 53 per cent coffee and 47 per cent chicory at 399 rupees, and one titled 80 per cent coffee and 20 per cent chicory at 439 rupees.

Per 100 g of pack the first is cheaper, at about 80 rupees against 88, but by the shares in those titles Rewalto works out that per 100 g of coffee it is dearer, at about 151 rupees against 110.

## Does the same pack cost the same at every pin code?

On 16 October 2026, Rewalto read Nescafe Classic 45 g on DMart at 175 rupees at an Ahmedabad pin code and 213 rupees at a Pune pin code, with the same MRP of 230 rupees at all five pin codes read. That is about 389 to 473 rupees per 100 g for one product on one day, by Rewalto's arithmetic.

The gap is smaller for some products. Between 15 and 20 October 2026, Rewalto read Red Label leaf tea 500 g on JioMart at 285 rupees at a Bengaluru pin code and 304 rupees at a Mumbai one. Our post on [why the price you see on Blinkit is not the price](https://rewalto.com/blog/why-a-blinkit-price-is-not-the-price) explains why place and time move a price.

## How should a coffee or tea brand compare unit prices?

Four checks keep a price per hundred grams honest:

- Compare the same format: instant with instant, freeze-dried with freeze-dried, premix with premix.
- Compare similar pack sizes, or state on the comparison that the packs differ.
- For blends, divide by the coffee content the pack states as well as by its weight.
- Compare at the same pin code and the same time, and keep the retailer's page behind each price.

## What can a unit price reading not tell you?

Whether shoppers chose a pack, what it cost the retailer, or why a price moved. A reading shows the price displayed at one pin code at one time. The readings here are one week of JioMart and DMart listings, and they illustrate the checks below for that week.

Rewalto records selling price, MRP and pack size for the products you choose, by pin code and time, and works out the unit price from them, with the retailer's page address behind each reading.

## Quick answers

### Is a bigger pack always cheaper per gram?

Often, and you should check. Catering packs, multi-packs and sachet boxes can be priced on different terms, so work out each pack's price per hundred grams instead of assuming it.

### Why divide a blend by its coffee content?

Because a blend's weight includes chicory as well as coffee. Dividing by the coffee share the pack states compares the coffee itself, which is what a shopper paying for strength cares about.

### Can I compare unit prices across pin codes?

Only with care. The same pack can sell at different prices at different pin codes on the same app, so compare at the same pin code and the same time, and keep the retailer's page behind each price.
