# Zero-click search in India: why sessions are no longer the whole scorecard

Zero-click search means a shopper gets an answer and never visits your site, so sessions understate your reach. In a post dated 10 August 2026, Zane Marketing argues brands should add branded search impressions to the scorecard. We add a second line: what AI assistants say when asked your category's questions.

## Key takeaways

- Zane Marketing argues a sessions line alone is an unfair scorecard, and suggests four lines to replace it.
- We have not measured how much zero-click behaviour there is in India. Treat the size as your own data to check.
- A search scorecard counts impressions. It cannot show what an assistant said, which needs its own record.
- Keep the two records apart, and label which of your lines are measured and which are hypotheses.

This post is the timely take. The evergreen how-to is the guide [A zero-click AEO scorecard your team can run every month](https://rewalto.com/guides/zero-click-aeo-scorecard), which covers the topic in full.

## What is zero-click search, and what is being argued about it in India?

Zero-click search is a search that ends without a visit: the shopper gets an answer on the results page or from an assistant and never opens your site. In a post dated 10 August 2026, [Zane Marketing argues](https://zane.marketing/zero-click-search-brand-strategy-india/) that a growing share of searches now end this way, that AI summaries close questions which used to need a page, and that a sessions line alone has therefore become an unfair scorecard for a brand.

Zane's view is that an impression where your brand is named is a brand asset to value like a targeted display impression, not a lost click. It writes for Indian brands, and it separates publishers, whose product is the page view, from brands that sell products, for whom it calls zero-click a channel shift rather than an existential threat.

## Are sessions still a fair scorecard?

Zane says they were always a proxy, a good one for a decade, and that a report built only on sessions and conversion rate has been getting less complete for some time. We agree with the narrow point. A single line can hide a change in how shoppers find you, and a brand that sees only sessions may read a healthy shift as a decline or miss a real one.

We would add a caution. We have not measured how much zero-click behaviour there is in India, and nothing in this post says how large it is. Treat the size of the effect as unknown until you have looked at your own Search Console data.

## What does Zane suggest measuring instead?

Zane recommends replacing the single organic sessions line with four. Branded search impressions each month, which it calls the cleanest available proxy for zero-click value. Unbranded impressions as a pure visibility measure. Organic revenue rather than organic traffic. And assisted conversions from organic and direct together.

It also advises answering the question directly in the first sixty words under a heading phrased as a shopper would type it, and putting something behind the answer that a summary cannot carry. We follow the first of those on this blog: every post opens with its answer.

## What does a search-only scorecard still miss?

What the assistant said. Search Console can tell you how often you appeared. It cannot tell you whether an assistant named your brand when a shopper asked your category's questions, or what reason it gave. That is a second record, and it needs its own method: a fixed panel of questions, asked on a schedule, with every answer saved word for word.

Keep the two apart. One counts impressions and the other saves what was said, and a number that blends them would hide which side moved. Our guide to the [zero-click and AI scorecard](https://rewalto.com/guides/zero-click-aeo-scorecard) sets out how to build both, and the guide on [share of AI](https://rewalto.com/guides/share-of-ai) explains how to talk about the second without overclaiming.

Side 1

The search scorecard

Branded and unbranded impressions in Search Console, organic revenue and assisted conversions. It shows how often you appeared, and it cannot show what an answer said.

Side 2

The assistant scorecard

A fixed panel of shopper questions, asked on a schedule, with each answer saved word for word and a note of whether your brand was named. It shows what was said, and it cannot count visits.

Two records that answer different questions. They are kept apart on purpose: one counts impressions, the other saves what an assistant said.

## How should you explain this to leadership?

Zane's advice is to set the expectation before the numbers land: tell the board that organic sessions may fall while organic revenue holds, and say so in the quarter before it happens. We would go one step further and label what you know. Which of your lines are measured, over what period, and which are a hypothesis about cause.

A report that names its boundaries is trusted for the parts inside them. A report that stretches one impression trend into a claim about sales is not.

## What should you not conclude from any of this?

That zero-click is harmless, or that it is ruinous. Both are claims about size, and the size is yours to measure. Do not conclude either that an AI answer naming you will bring a sale, since a mention is not a recommendation and neither is a purchase. And do not withhold answers to force a click: Zane's own advice is that this gets a brand left out of the summary.

For a practical next step, the guide on [where AI answers get their sources](https://rewalto.com/guides/ai-cited-sources) explains how to examine a saved answer and its cited pages. Check website access separately from whether an assistant names your brand.

## Quick answers

### What is zero-click search?

A search that ends without a visit to a website, because the answer appears on the results page or in an assistant.

### Does zero-click search matter for a brand that sells products?

Zane argues it is mainly a change in what you can measure rather than a loss of the revenue mechanism, and that it hurts publishers most. The size of the effect for your brand is something to measure in your own data.

### Does Rewalto measure zero-click impressions?

No. Search Console reports impressions. Rewalto's AI visibility work saves what an assistant said to a fixed panel of questions. AI visibility covers five engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity and Google AI. Every answer says which engine produced it and how it was captured.
