# What does out of stock mean on quick-commerce apps?

Out of stock means a product cannot be ordered at a given place and time, even if its page still shows. On quick-commerce apps it is a state of one product at one dark store, so measure it as the share of stores or pin codes where the product reads unavailable, on a stated day.

The short definition, also called stockout, sold out: A product that cannot be ordered because the store has none. On quick-commerce apps it is a state of a product at one dark store at one moment.

## What out of stock means

A product is out of stock when the shopper cannot add it to the basket. On most apps the page does not disappear. It stays in search and on the category page with a greyed button, a notify option or a sold out label, so a page that loads is not proof the product can be ordered.

The opposite reading is availability: the share of places where the product can be ordered. Over the same pairs on the same day, the out-of-stock rate and the availability rate add up to 100%.

## How to calculate an out-of-stock rate

Pick a set of products and a set of pin codes, read each pair on the same day, and drop the pairs where stock could not be read. The out-of-stock rate is the pairs that read unavailable divided by the pairs where stock was known.

A worked example, with invented numbers. A brand checks 5 products at 20 pin codes, which makes 100 pairs. Stock cannot be read for 4 of them, so 96 pairs count, and 12 read unavailable. The out-of-stock rate is 12 divided by 96, or 12.5%.

A value-weighted rate gives more weight to the products that sell the most, so one missing bestseller counts for more than one missing slow seller.

## How it shows up on Indian quick-commerce apps

Because each dark store holds its own stock, a product can be in stock at one pin code and out at the next, and it can flip within a day as stores are refilled. Evening peaks and festival weeks tend to empty the shelves that sell quickest. A delisted product looks similar from the outside, so check whether the listing is gone or only empty.

## What a brand should check

- The out-of-stock rate for your bestsellers, not only the average across every product.
- Which pin codes go out most often, and at what time of day.
- Whether ads or promotions were running while the product could not be ordered.

## Common mistakes

- Counting a page that loads as in stock.
- Leaving out the pairs where stock could not be read, without saying so.
- Comparing rates read at different times of day.

## Do not confuse with

- [Delisted](https://rewalto.com/glossary/quick-commerce#delisting): An out-of-stock product still has a listing at that store that cannot be ordered. A delisted product has no listing there at all.

## What Rewalto's own readings show

From 19 October to 25 October 2026, grocery staples in Delhi read out of stock in 1.25% of 5,903 readings where stock was known, on Blinkit and Zepto at 2 pin codes. It was the highest rate of the 10 cities Rewalto read for the category that week.
