# What is retail media? Meaning for brands in India

Retail media is advertising a brand buys on a retailer's own app or site, such as sponsored search rows and banners. The retailer sells the space and reports the results. On Indian quick-commerce apps it sits inside search and category pages, so check stock at the target pin codes before paying.

The short definition, also called on-app advertising: Advertising a brand buys on a retailer's own app or site, such as sponsored search slots and banners. The retailer sells the space and reports the results.

## What retail media means

A retailer that owns a busy app also owns its most valuable space: the first rows of search and the banners on category pages. Retail media is the business of selling that space to brands. It sits closer to the sale than most advertising, because the shopper is already in the store.

The retailer runs the auction, places the ads and reports clicks, orders and spend in its own portal. A brand sees its own results but not the full picture of rivals' spend.

## How to judge a retail media campaign

Compare what the ads delivered with what would have happened without them. Track organic position, stock and price at the same pin codes during the campaign, so a rise in orders can be separated from a rival running out or a discount starting.

A worked example, with invented numbers. A brand spends on sponsored rows for one query in 20 pin codes. Its product is out of stock in 5 of them for half the week. Roughly an eighth of the spend went to shoppers who could not order, before any other loss is counted.

## How it shows up on Indian apps

Quick-commerce apps run retail media inside search and category pages, and some offer banners and sampling. Marketplaces have run it longer, with more formats. Festival weeks raise the price of the same slot as more brands bid.

## What a brand should check

- Stock at the target pin codes before a campaign starts and while it runs.
- Your organic position on the queries you pay for.
- Whether a price change or a rival's stock gap explains a result.

## Common mistakes

- Paying for rows on a product that cannot be ordered where the ad shows.
- Judging a campaign only from the retailer's own report.
- Paying to lift a position the product already holds organically.

## Do not confuse with

- [A sponsored result](https://rewalto.com/glossary/quick-commerce/organic-vs-sponsored): Retail media is the whole advertising business a retailer runs on its app, banners included. A sponsored result is one paid row inside search or a category page.

## What Rewalto does not measure

Rewalto does not measure retail media spend or results. Those sit in each app's own advertising portal. What Rewalto reads is the shelf around an ad: stock, price and position at a pin code, on a dated day.
