# What is share of search? Meaning and how to measure it

Share of search is the share of the top search results, for a set of queries, that belong to one brand. On quick-commerce apps, count the first rows a shopper sees for each query at a stated pin code and date, and say whether sponsored results are included, because they change the answer.

The short definition, also called search visibility share: The share of top search results, for a set of queries, that belong to a brand. It measures how visible the brand is when shoppers look for the category.

## What share of search means

Shoppers on a quick-commerce app mostly search rather than browse. Whoever fills the first rows for atta, shampoo or chips is the most likely to be added to the basket. Share of search measures how much of that space a brand holds across the queries that matter to its category.

Marketers also use the phrase for a brand's share of searches on Google. That is a different measure: it counts how often people search for a brand, not where the brand appears in an app's results. This page uses the in-app meaning.

## How to measure share of search

Choose a fixed list of queries, a number of result rows to count, the pin codes and the day. For each query, count the rows that belong to your brand. Share of search is your rows divided by all rows counted, across every query.

A worked example, with invented numbers. A tea brand tracks 5 queries and counts the first 8 results for each, so 40 rows in all. Its products fill 2, 1, 0, 3 and 2 rows, or 8 of 40, a share of search of 20%. If 3 of those 8 rows were sponsored, its organic share is 5 of 40, or 12.5%.

## How it shows up on Indian quick-commerce apps

The first screen on a phone shows only a handful of products, so a few rows decide most of the outcome. Results differ by pin code because each store only shows what it stocks, and an item that runs out may drop down the list or leave it. Sponsored slots sit among the organic results and carry a small label that is easy to miss.

## What a brand should check

- That the query list holds the generic words shoppers type, not only your brand name.
- Organic and sponsored rows, reported separately.
- Results at the pin codes where you sell, read on the same day.
- Whether a drop came from a rival's ads or from your own stock running out.

## Common mistakes

- Searching for your own brand name and calling that share of search.
- Changing the query list between two readings and comparing the results.
- Counting rows from a desktop page when shoppers use the phone app.

## Do not confuse with

- Share of search on Google: On Google, share of search usually means how often people search for a brand by name. Inside a shopping app it is the share of the results a brand fills.
- [Share of shelf](https://rewalto.com/glossary/quick-commerce/share-of-shelf): Share of shelf counts the listings on a category page, not the results for a query.

## What Rewalto does not measure

This page shows no Rewalto share-of-search figure. A share only means something with its query list, rows and pin codes, and we have not published one for a category on this site. The dataset page says what is read and how often.

## Questions people ask

### How do you calculate share of search?

Choose a fixed list of queries, count the rows your brand fills in the top results for each, and divide by all rows counted, for a stated pin code and date.

### Does share of search include sponsored results?

It can, but say so. Report organic and sponsored rows separately, because sponsored rows change what the number means.

### Is share of search the same on Google and inside an app?

No. On Google it usually counts how often people search for a brand. Inside an app it is the share of the results a brand fills.
