# Every number shows where it came from.

Benchmarks, assortment gaps and category reports are built from the prices and pages we saved, and every figure links back to them, so you can open a number instead of taking it on trust.

## Three kinds of number, each labelled

### Counted

We saw it on the page: a price, a rank, a number of stores. Shown as a single number, linked to the pages it was counted from.

### Estimated

A model worked it out and nobody counted it. Always shown as a range, with how it was worked out.

### An analyst's opinion

A person's call. Shown in a labelled box, so it never looks like a counted fact.

## Why we keep them apart

A report that mixes the three can be right in every sentence and still leave you with the wrong idea, and you would never find out where it came from.

So every figure carries its label, and a number with no source can’t leave the product.

## The data underneath it all.

What we track, how far back it goes, and where each number comes from.
