The short definition, also called range, product mix
The set of products a retailer, or one dark store, chooses to list. On a quick-commerce app the assortment is small compared with a marketplace, and it differs from one store to the next.
Part of the topic: Guide: listed but unavailable
What assortment means
Assortment has two sides. Breadth is how many categories a retailer covers; depth is how many products it holds within each one. A supermarket is broad and deep. A dark store is broad but shallow: it covers most everyday categories with only a few products in each.
For a brand the question is narrower: which of my products does this retailer, or this store, carry? That limits everything else. A product the store does not carry cannot be in stock, ranked or discounted there.
How to measure a brand's assortment
List the products you want carried. For each store or pin code, record which of them have a listing that can be found. The assortment rate is the products carried divided by the products on your list. Read it again weekly, because stores add and drop products.
A worked example, with invented numbers. A personal care brand wants 15 products on an app. Store X carries 9, Store Y carries 6 and Store Z carries 12. Across the three stores the brand holds 27 of 45 possible places, an assortment rate of 60%, and Store Y is the gap to raise with the app.
How it shows up on Indian quick-commerce apps
Shelf space in a dark store is tight, so apps pick the packs that sell quickest in each area. A product in the app's catalogue may still be missing from your neighbourhood store, and two shoppers in two pin codes can see different ranges of the same brand on the same evening.
What a brand should check
- Which of your products each store carries, not only what the app's catalogue lists.
- Whether the missing products cluster in one city or one kind of store.
- How the assortment changes after a launch or a pack change.
- How many products rival brands hold in the same stores.
Common mistakes
- Taking the app's catalogue as the store's shelf.
- Treating a gap as a supply fault when the store never chose to carry the product.
- Comparing assortments read on different days.
Do not confuse with
- Share of shelf. Assortment is which products a store chooses to carry. Share of shelf is the part of a category's visible listings that belong to one brand.
What Rewalto's own readings show
From 19 October to 25 October 2026, Rewalto saw 1,661 grocery staple products from 315 brands on Blinkit and Zepto in Chennai, at 2 pin codes: the widest range of the 10 cities read for the category that week. A product we did not see is not counted.
