What is serviceability? Pin code serviceability explained

Serviceability is whether an app delivers to a given pin code or address at all. On quick-commerce apps a pin code is serviceable when a dark store is close enough to reach it within the promised time. It comes before stock: a product cannot be in stock for a shopper the app does not serve.

The short definition, also called pin-code serviceability, deliverable area

Whether an app will deliver to a given address at all. A pin code can be serviceable for one app and not for another, and for one delivery mode and not another.

Part of the topic: Check availability by pin code

What serviceability means

Before an app shows prices or stock, it checks the location. If no store can reach the address, the app says it does not deliver there yet, and nothing else can be read. Serviceability is that first yes or no.

It is set by distance and by the store's delivery radius, and an app can shrink or widen the radius during rain, peak hours or festivals. So a pin code can be serviceable in the morning and closed in the evening.

How to measure serviceability

Take a list of pin codes or addresses, check each one on each app on the same day, and record whether the app serves it. The serviceability rate is the pin codes served divided by the pin codes checked.

A worked example, with invented numbers. A brand checks 50 pin codes in one city on two apps. App A serves 46 of them and App B serves 38, rates of 92% and 76%. A product sold only on App B cannot reach shoppers in 12 of those pin codes, whatever its stock.

How it shows up in India

Serviceability follows the dark-store network. Large metros are mostly covered, while smaller cities may have one or two stores and gaps at the edges. Because one pin code can cover a wide area, one address in it may be served while another is not, so check a central point and an edge.

What a brand should check

  • Which of your target pin codes each app serves today.
  • Whether the gaps sit where your distributors already sell offline.
  • How serviceability changes at peak hours and in festival weeks.
  • Whether a launch city has enough served pin codes to be worth a launch.

Common mistakes

  • Reading stock at a pin code the app does not serve, and recording it as out of stock.
  • Checking one address and treating the whole pin code as served.
  • Assuming a city is covered because the app lists it.

Do not confuse with

  • Availability. Serviceability asks whether the app delivers to a pin code at all. Availability asks whether a product is in stock at a pin code the app already serves.

What Rewalto's own readings show

In the 14 days to 28 October 2026, Rewalto read Blinkit at 196 pin codes and Zepto at 165, out of 243 distinct pin codes read across 12 apps and stores. These are the pin codes we read, not every pin code an app serves.
