What is discount depth? Meaning and how to calculate it

Discount depth is how far below the printed MRP a product sells, as a percentage of the MRP. Calculate it as MRP minus selling price, divided by MRP, times 100. Read it for the same pack, on a stated app, pin code and day, because the discount on one pack can differ by app, city and hour.

The short definition, also called discount percentage off mrp

How far below the printed MRP a product is being sold, expressed as a percentage. It compares the selling price with the MRP on the pack.

Part of the topic: Guide: discount depth and price against MRP

What discount depth means

Every listing on an Indian app shows two numbers, the MRP and the selling price. Discount depth turns the gap between them into one comparable figure. A 10% discount on a small pack and a 10% discount on a large pack mean the same thing, even though the rupee gap differs.

It is a measure of price position, not of who paid for the discount. An app can fund a discount from its own margin, a brand can fund it through a promotion, or both can share it. The shelf shows only the result.

How to calculate discount depth

For one listing, subtract the selling price from the MRP, divide by the MRP and multiply by 100. For a range, take the median across listings rather than the average, so a handful of deep clearance discounts does not pull the figure up. Report the share of listings past a line, such as 20% off, alongside the median.

A worked example, with invented numbers. A brand reads 5 of its packs on one app. Their discounts are 5%, 8%, 10%, 12% and 40%. The median is 10%; the average is 15%, lifted by the single 40% pack. One pack in five, or 20%, sits at 20% off or more.

How it shows up on Indian apps

Quick-commerce apps change discounts by city and through the day, and run deeper discounts in festival weeks. Marketplaces stack sale prices, bank offers and coupons, and only the first of those reaches the listed price. A discount far above the category's usual range is often a wrong MRP or a pack mismatch rather than a real offer.

What a brand should check

  • Discount depth on your packs against the discount you planned and funded.
  • The same pack across apps and pin codes, read on the same day.
  • Whether a rival's discount moved before yours, and by how much.
  • Unusually deep discounts, checked against the pack before they are trusted.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging discounts when a few deep ones distort the result.
  • Comparing a discount on one pack size with a discount on another.
  • Counting coupons or card offers as part of the listed discount.

Do not confuse with

  • Price gap. Discount depth always measures against the printed MRP of the same pack. A price gap compares what the same pack costs in two places, such as two apps or two pin codes.

Questions people ask

How do you calculate discount depth?
Subtract the selling price from the MRP, divide by the MRP and multiply by 100. For a range of listings, take the median.
Why use the median discount rather than the average?
So a handful of deep clearance discounts does not pull the figure up. In the worked example the median is 10% while the average is 15%.
Does discount depth show who paid for the discount?
No. An app, a brand or both can fund a discount. The shelf shows only the result.
