The short definition, also called offer price, discounted price
The price an app actually charges for a product right now, at or below the MRP. It can change by app, city, store and hour.
Part of the topic: Guide: discount depth and price against MRP
What selling price means
The selling price is the number in bold on a product page, the one that goes into the basket. It is set by the app or the seller and can change daily, while the MRP stays fixed until the brand prints a new one.
Some apps show a further price for members or for a minimum basket. Treat those as separate prices and say which one you recorded.
How to read and compare selling prices
Record the selling price with the pack size, the app, the pin code and the time. To compare packs, divide the selling price by the quantity to get a unit price, such as per 100 g or per 100 ml. To compare with the MRP, the gap is the discount.
A worked example, with invented numbers. A 200 ml bottle sells for 90 and a 500 ml bottle for 200. Per 100 ml, the small bottle costs 45 and the large one 40, so the large bottle is about 11% lower per 100 ml even though its selling price is higher.
How it shows up on Indian apps
Quick-commerce apps can price the same pack differently by city, and sometimes by store, so two pin codes in one city may see different selling prices on the same day. Marketplaces show several sellers for one product, each with its own selling price, and most shoppers pay the one in the main box.
What a brand should check
- Selling prices at the pin codes where most of your orders come from.
- Whether a discount you funded shows up in the selling price on every app.
- Unit prices of your packs against the packs shoppers compare them with.
Common mistakes
- Recording a price without its pack size or pin code.
- Mixing member prices or checkout coupons with listed selling prices.
- Comparing selling prices of different pack sizes without converting to a unit price.
Do not confuse with
- MRP. The MRP is the printed maximum and stays fixed until the brand prints a new one. The selling price is what the app charges today, at or below the MRP.
