The short definition
The highest price a retailer may charge for a packaged product in India, printed on the pack and inclusive of all taxes. A retailer can sell below it, never above.
Part of the topic: Guide: discount depth and price against MRP
What MRP means
Every packaged consumer product sold in India carries a maximum retail price, inclusive of all taxes. It is a ceiling, not a recommended price: a retailer can charge less, and most apps do, but charging more breaks the rules on packaged goods.
Online sellers must show the MRP on the product page as well as on the pack. That is why app pages show two numbers, the MRP struck through and the selling price beside it.
How MRP is used in calculations
Discount is MRP minus selling price. Discount percentage is that difference divided by the MRP, times 100. Comparisons often start from the MRP because it stays fixed while selling prices move.
A worked example, with invented numbers. A 500 g pack of rice has an MRP of 120 and sells for 102 on one app, a discount of 18, or 15% of the MRP. A 1 kg pack with an MRP of 230 selling at 207 is 10% off, yet costs 20.7 per 100 g against 20.4 for the smaller pack.
How it shows up on Indian apps
Quick-commerce apps show the MRP on every listing and sell most products below it. A product priced at its MRP reads as no discount at all. A listing whose MRP differs from the printed one is usually a pack mismatch or an old MRP, and worth checking against the pack itself.
What a brand should check
- That the MRP each app shows matches the pack in circulation, especially after a price change.
- Whether any listing shows a selling price above the MRP.
- How far below MRP your products sell, compared with your plan.
Common mistakes
- Treating MRP as the price shoppers pay.
- Comparing discounts between packs that carry different MRPs for the same contents.
- Forgetting that old stock may still carry the previous MRP after a price change.
Do not confuse with
- Selling price. The MRP is the printed maximum for the pack. The selling price is what the app or shop charges, and it may not be higher than the MRP.
What Rewalto's own readings show
From 19 September to 25 September 2026, 100% of 7,94,882 Blinkit readings at 30 pin codes showed an MRP, and 100% were priced at or under it. No reading that week was verified above its MRP.
